Karoline Herr: Pastel Decor Dreams in Munich

Chances are - if you are into pastel colors, just as we are - that you’ve stumbled upon Karoline Herr on Instagram at some point. Either on her account, or on one of the many accounts featuring her account. No wonder her profile blew up during the pandemic: With her wonderful mix of coziness, avantgarde and pastel-colored playfulness, she is one of the big voices in the interior space - and one of the few whose style you can recognize the second one of her images pops up.

But who’s behind these amazingly styled rooms? Influencer and content creator Karoline Herr aka Frollein Herr (you can see her on a picture further below) works as a blogger and creative in Munich. Her eye-candy apartment is filled with pastel interior, rose decor objects - and a whole lot of personality.

We were excited to get a glimpse on her apartment full of carefully curated and selected treasures - from beautiful still life arrangements to her very own artworks.

Let’s have a look!

Interior design in Munich

Karoline, How did you get interested in interior design?

“Actually there isn’t a clear starting point for my love for interior design. I always loved aesthetics, design, colors and shapes. I remember spending Sundays as a kid in my room cleaning out, rearranging, hanging posters etc. The process of arranging a space always had a very calming and inspiring effect on me.

But I’d say that moving into my current apartment changed the scope of what I’m able to do regarding interior design.

Now I have more space to get creative in – that offers way more opportunities and I love that.“

How do you start when you combine things in your apartment or rearrange entire rooms?

“Unfortunately I’m not as organized as I would like to be when it comes to it.

Sure, I do some mood boards or save certain pins or posts that inspire me, but in the end I just start with one piece, color or material and just see where it takes me.“

Now you also do your own paintings - what’s the story behind that?

“Honestly this was just a way for me to keep busy during the first lockdown. I’ve always used doing things with my hands as a balance for my job which is mostly sitting in front of a desk and write.

So I did some jewellery, pottery, I even started knitting. At some point I just went out and bought canvases, brushes and acrylic paint.

I never had a specific goal or expectations – I was just curious what would come out. I love the process of making things. It’s not so much about the result, but more about being focused for a couple of hours and not think, but just do.

But: I do love a lot of my pieces and I will definitely keep on painting.“

Can you tell us about your favorite places for online interior shopping? (Let’s say the top 5 that you most often get back to?)

“I love digital platforms like trouva or etsy where you can find very special and often handmade pieces. But I also love interior classics or design pieces.

The best addresses to browse through are Design Bestsellers, Ambiente Direct or fashion shops that have an interior selection like luisaviaroma, matchesfashion or netaporter. And of course Westwing.“

I feel that the Corona months changed many people’s attitude towards their apartments because they suddenly spent so much time there. What did change for you?

“Absolutely! I personally have always been a person that needed this time at home alone and I always valued having a home I felt good in.

But I think the sudden amount of time we all had to spend at home made people realize how important it is to make your space a real home.

That became very obvious to me during Corona as interior is now one of my strongest content categories, whereas before it was beauty and fashion. People just wanted to get inspired and see what they could do in their own homes, I guess.“

What is the most underestimated apartment “hack” that you think can change a lot?

Wall colors. It’s so easy to change a room’s feeling and atmosphere by just changing the colors on the walls. I also love to spend a day painting and the feeling of having “achieved” a big change in just a day.

If I could, I would change my wall colors almost every month – but I think my boyfriend would veto that.“
