How do you combine harmonic color palettes?

“Thank you so much! Happy you like it!

I was always a creative person, design was always a part of me and with a degree in fashion design and art I just refined my feeling and touch for design and colors. For me, I try not to think about it too much. If I love a color or a color combo, I just go for it. In my opinion, every color goes with any other color in some way, one just needs to find the right balance and shades.

For color beginners I suggest to just start with one color either stay within a color family (ie. red: pink, fuchsia, pale pink, brick red, bordeaux etc.) or focus on one color only and find a second one to add later on. Other possibilities are, to stay only in pastel colors or pastel colors and one primary color (ie. pastel yellow, pastel pink, pastel blue and primary red). Do not go for more than 5 colors at once. It might get too much in one room, especially, when you have a small flat like us.

You can also find some color harmony generators online if you are not sure, but honestly, everything goes, just try and have fun.”

What kind of interior objects are perfect to play with colors?

Textiles in general are a good playground for colors, easy to change and one does not risk much budget if one does not like it. I love good bedding, it changes the bedroom immediately, a few matching cushions et voilà!

Curtains are great too, they are covering a bigger space and can make a big impact on the interior, especially if one wants to paint the walls but is not sure yet! What I also love for walls is, wall art, a great way to make the wall colorful without painting it. You can change the content of the frames as often as you wish.

Lamps and other small accessories would be the next step followed by small furniture like a stool, pouf or chair. It does not need to be the colorful sofa, how about a colorful armchair instead.”

When it comes to walls and patterns - how do you choose a cool, modern but also calm pattern? Any tips?

“Hmm, it really depends on one's preference, style and size of the room. It is important what the room vibe should be about, what do I want from the room, an eye catcher or a zen zone ie. Do I want it to be bold, elegant or just something that is not a "naked wall".

Wallpaper can have a huge impact on the room and vibe. I just fell in love with the wallpaper I saw and needed to have it, our ceilings are not high, so I picked something not busy, not dark and still with some movement to not make the room look smaller. I personally am a huge fan and admirer of BelarteSTUDIO, I am convinced, every design is so delicate but strong at the same time - it would go anywhere.”

Bedroom - we love your pillow covers and bedsheet covers. Where to buy them? And what is your favorite color combination and why?

“I am getting them from various places, wherever I see an intriguing color I have not tried yet, it just needs to be 100% cotton or 100% linen. My favourite and also my community's favorite is definitely the lilac linen bedsheets from Jowollina. It's such a great color.

The latest bedsheet covers I bought from h&m home, I loved the colors and stripes, but have not figured out yet how to make the colors work haha. I might balance it out with new wall art and a new color, so it's harmonious. My favorite color combinations change every 4-6 months, so does my interior. Lately I like red accents in red.”

Where do you get inspired? Any cool Instagram accounts we should follow right away?

“Anything at any time can inspire me, I used to be obsessed by Tim Burton when I was in fashion school - totally different vibe haha. I used to love dark, morbid and historical vintage interiors and fashion back then.

Right now, I just love the comeback of the 90s and 80s design, tiles, patterns, neon, colors in combination with classics from the 30s. Love the neon and the new interpretation of this era, just so much fun!

I love @carolinehulbaek @alfredbramsen @cathdelichtenberg @adenwang @bbrill @girlzpop_ @helene_rebelo @ulrikawestman @swantjehinrichsen to name a few.”

When it comes to redesign a new room or apartment - what are small design tips that can make a big difference?

“As mentioned above, textiles can make an impact, rugs and curtains can change the light and feel of the room, make it feel larger, smaller, cosier or more spacious. Also, if one is completely overwhelmed on where to start. Think on paper, maybe you can change the position of the sofa?  Do not be afraid of putting furniture in the middle of a room, instead of pushing everything against the wall.”

What is a “must have” interior object for an interior lover?

“Hmm, I would say something any interior lover has at home, is at least something by Verner Panton or Charles Eames. Well known classics that fit every style.”

Do you follow interior design trends?

Yes and no. :) As a designer I am trying to create my own trends and do what I like. During fashion school I tried never to get influenced by other designers and search inspiration somewhere else.

I have done trend research since 2006, so at some point you understand the trends, how they happen and how they work. I never buy something because it's a trend, sometimes I am ahead of a trend and sometimes I suddenly love something that was a trend 3 seasons ago - does not bother me.”
