Suzanne, your colorful, playful and funky style is amazing. We absolutely looove your content on Instagram. How do you find the balance between funky and clean style?

“When I started making plans for our home, I made a mood board. All choices I make are based on that. The basis is clean, Scandinavian with simple shapes and natural materials. But I love making colorful statements, so my interior gets a playful and funky look. I love tantalizing art and items that make you smile. An interior doesn’t have to be that serious, is my opinion.”

How do you choose the color palette for a space if you want to achieve a funky and playful vibe?

“I make choices based on feelings. Which colors do I absolutely love? Those colors I use in my home. Most of the time I use color contrasts, like pink and blue (warm-cold contrast) because those clashing color make a space exciting to look at.”

Can you share some tips on how to effectively mix and match different colors, patterns and texture to create a playful cool look?

“Take a striking, graphic wallpaper as a starting point. Choose your wall painting in the same colors of this wallpaper and pick a number of accessories in the same shapes of the graphic print. For a playful look, add some personal, funny items with a contrast color or shape. Et voilà!”

Where do you get your cool decor accessories like ceramics, vases, candles?

“I get them everywhere. Usually, I fall in love with an item and if it sticks in my mind, it has to live in my home 😉 I love the big Scandinavian brands like Hay and Muuto, and Dutch brands like Fest Amsterdam and @klevering.

But I also love to go shopping in second hand stores. Instagram is also a big inspiration; last year I discovered a great brand named Octaevo, a Spaninsh design studio. Wow!”

Bathroom makeover - what are some easy steps to make a bathroom look more funky?

“Add color!! Black, white, gray? No way! Your bathroom is part of your interior as well. Use the colors of your home is this space as well. Add nice small furniture, a soft rug and accessories to make this room look cozy and comfy.”

Can you tell us your top tips - when it comes to colored furniture?

“Big game design has created some enchanting pieces of furniture for Moustache editions. When I saw those, I knew I was going to get one of them some day. The rounded shapes and colors, love them! Have the kobalt blue Bold chair, an absolute show pony. Hay, Muuto and Fest have all lovely colored items in their collections. A feast to watch!”

“Instagram is full of inspiration. I love following Karim Rashid Official and Studio Sam Buckley for their magnificent use of shapes and colors. Anchorball for its unlimited possibilities, and Elle Decoration for all the new things that are coming.”
